A $400 Weapon Taking Out Million-Dollar Tanks
Ukraine is using small, low-cost first-person-view (FPV) drones to destroy Russian armor at a fraction of what traditional weapons cost. A single FPV drone costs as little as $400 and can take out a tank worth millions of dollars. That cost gap is staggering. For the price of one artillery barrage, Ukraine can field dozens of these drones — and they keep coming. Russia has no easy answer.
The numbers back this up. By early June 2025, Ukraine had lost 31 U.S.-supplied Abrams tanks in combat. Drones destroyed 27 of them. That’s not a footnote — that’s a battlefield reality that every defense planner in Washington should be reading carefully. The era of sending expensive armor into drone-saturated territory without serious risk is over.
The Cable That Beats Electronic Warfare
Russia has invested heavily in electronic warfare — systems designed to jam radio signals and knock drones out of the sky. But fiber-optic FPV drones don’t use radio signals. They trail a thin physical cable as they fly, making them immune to jamming. Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation called fiber-optic drones “one of the game changers in modern technological warfare.” That’s not hype — it’s a technical fact Russia can’t easily counter.
Add artificial intelligence to the mix and the threat grows even sharper. A Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) analysis found that AI-enabled autonomous navigation pushes strike success rates from 10–20% up to 70–80%. That’s a three-to-four-times improvement in hitting the target. Ukrainian military sources confirmed these figures. Independent verification is still limited, but the trend is clear and the battlefield results are hard to argue with.
Drones on Defense Too — Stopping Russia’s Shahed Strikes
Ukraine isn’t just using drones to attack. Interceptor drones — funded partly by private donations — shot down more than 1,000 Russian Shahed drones in just four months. That’s a cost-effective way to defend against a weapon Russia has used to hammer Ukrainian cities and power infrastructure. Traditional air defense systems like Patriot missiles cost far more per intercept. Ukraine found a cheaper answer.

Ukraine’s drone program hit another milestone in scale. The Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s armed forces reported that Ukrainian drones struck over 67,000 Russian targets in a single month. Drone strikes also cut the number of artillery shells needed to achieve the same military effect, reducing the strain on supply lines. That matters — ammunition logistics have been one of the hardest problems for Ukraine to solve, especially with U.S. aid debates dragging on in Washington.
A Revolution — But Not a Complete One
Some defense analysts caution against declaring tanks and traditional forces obsolete. The Center for Strategic and International Studies, West Point’s Modern War Institute, and the Australian Army Research Centre all say drones “augment” rather than replace conventional forces. Ukraine’s August 2024 push into Russia’s Kursk region showed that large-scale ground maneuver is still possible even with drones everywhere on the battlefield. Four of the 31 U.S. tanks lost were not destroyed by drones — proof that traditional platforms still survive in some conditions.
The smarter read is this: drones haven’t made tanks useless, but they’ve made moving armor in the open extremely dangerous and expensive. Any military — including the U.S. — that ignores what Ukraine has built does so at serious risk. The lesson from this war is that cheap, smart, scalable technology can level a battlefield fast. America needs to be leading this race, not catching up to it.
