Vice President Harris Faces Tough Questions on Immigration and Approval Ratings in ’60 Minutes’ Appearance

Vice President Kamala Harris appeared on CBS’s "60 Minutes" in an interview aired on October 29, 2023, where she tackled critical issues ahead of the 2024 election. Interviewed by Bill Whitaker, Harris defended the Biden administration's policies on the economy, immigration, and foreign relations. Throughout the interview, she projected confidence in the Democrats' agenda while facing scrutiny over her public approval ratings and her role in addressing domestic challenges like gun violence and immigration.

Harris emphasized the administration’s commitment to standing by Ukraine and Israel, two democracies currently facing aggression. Despite concerns that the Israel-Hamas war might overshadow Ukraine's plight, Harris firmly denied that the conflict in the Middle East would shift U.S. focus away from Ukraine. “We are as committed to Ukraine as we’ve always been,” she asserted, downplaying the notion that the ongoing war in the Middle East might take precedence over U.S. support for Ukraine.

However, the conversation quickly pivoted to domestic issues, with Whitaker pressing Harris on her role as the Biden administration’s point person for some of the country’s most difficult problems, including gun violence and the southern border crisis. Harris lauded the administration’s achievements, such as passing the most significant gun control legislation in 30 years, but insisted that more needed to be done. She called for the renewal of the assault weapons ban, which expired years ago, stressing, "It doesn’t have to be this way.”

On immigration, Harris faced harsh criticism as the U.S. southern border continues to experience record levels of illegal crossings. Many Americans have expressed disapproval of her handling of the border crisis. In the interview, Harris acknowledged the complexity of the issue but reinforced the administration’s efforts to tackle the root causes of migration from Central America. She called on Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform but stopped short of detailing any new measures the White House plans to pursue.

Whitaker also confronted Harris about her approval ratings, which are currently at 41%, similar to President Biden's. Harris attributed the administration’s low polling numbers to a disconnect between the work they’ve done and public perception. She pointed to the lack of media coverage on key achievements, especially in areas like climate change and student loan debt relief, which resonate with younger voters. Harris admitted that rallying enthusiasm for the 2024 campaign would be a challenge but expressed optimism, noting that young people still prioritize issues her administration has addressed.

The vice president’s portrayal of the Biden administration’s accomplishments contrasted sharply with the criticism she faced. Despite being involved in both domestic and foreign policy, Harris’s public image remains polarized. Her gun ownership and stance on the Second Amendment came into the spotlight during the interview when she revealed that she owns and has fired a Glock, further stirring debate on her approach to gun control.

The interview came just as Donald Trump, Harris’s likely opponent in 2024, refused to appear on "60 Minutes." Trump’s decision to cancel his appearance drew a sharp response from Harris, who claimed it spoke volumes about his leadership. Her remarks reflected the campaign's broader strategy of positioning herself and Biden as the stabilizing force against the unpredictable nature of a Trump-led White House.

In the broader scope of the election campaign, Harris is looking to energize the Democratic base, focusing on hot-button issues like reproductive rights, gun control, and climate change, while also maintaining a strong stance on foreign policy. However, with Trump likely to intensify his attacks, Harris’s ability to sway undecided voters remains uncertain.
